There was a Christmas-y ukulele flashmob at the local Hy-Vee grocery store in the town where my sister lives, on Monday. It's pretty awesome.

Embedded vid behind the cut! )

Ooh! Apparently the group who did the flashmob, Ukulele Macomb meets every Saturday morning for ukulele-ness and jam sessions on Tuesday nights, and are planning their first Ukulele Festival on June 7-8 this coming year! :D

Still, who needs to watch Some Like It Hot again? Me, for certain.

(There's not a whole lot of actual ukulele playing in this clip, but... oh well? Happy weekend, folks!)

I don't remember in front of which movie I saw the trailer for Hotel Transylvania, but it does open on a very dark and stormy night... with Dracula playing a ukulele for his daughter. So, you know, I think I might be sold at least a little.

Hotel Transylvania still, Dracula playing ukulele

I just. He has lovely arms. And a beautiful, beautiful ukulele. See more of both here.

(Warning: The sound on the interview is not too great, so you may have to turn up your speakers to clearly hear what he's saying. But it's a neat interview! He talks about his ukulele, which came from the Kamaka family -- and having finally watched that short documentary, I can wholeheartedly endorse giving it 26 minutes. It quite surprised me!)

Making documentaries about ukulele clubs: the next big thing? Filmmaker Nina Koocher is making a movie about the Santa Cruz (Ca.) Ukulele Club, and it looks like it's going to be something else. You can lean more about Under the Boardwalk: A Ukulele Love Story here; the trailer is below.
Under the Boardwalk, A Ukulele Love Story tells the story of how a small house party in an out of the way town in California grows into the biggest ukulele club in the world. It is also the story of how a small instrument makes a long journey from Portugal to Hawaii to the mainland, lands in people’s hearts, and creates a uniquely Hawaiian-American musical tradition that is currently experiencing a world wide revival.

I haven't set aside the 26 minutes to watch this yet, but I'd like to! Heart Strings: The Story of the Kamaka 'Ukulele:
For nearly 100 years, Kamaka and Sons' 'ukuleles, produced from their tiny shop in Honolulu, have been the gold standard for 'ukuleles worldwide. This program is a story about the values of hard work, fortitude, honesty and creativity from a distinctly Hawaiian point of view.
Click the link to watch it on PBS, if that's available to you, or you can watch it on YouTube below.

Happy weekend, lovelies!

One of the great things about YouTube is that it's chock-full of characters. You just meet people at their most enthusiastic and they're completely wonderful and captivating. In the course of trying to decide whether to invest in this little gizmo, I found the following video review of support straps for your ukulele. Stick around through the end. I adore this guy already.

Spoiler alert: I bought the Uke Thong. Will review it here once it arrives. Happy Friday, folks! And a good long weekend for those celebrating Memorial Day.

That's not a violin. Repeat: that is not a violin.

Did you know atompunk was a thing? It's the 1960s/Jetsons-style equivalent of steampunk (Victorian) and dieselpunk (WWI through the early 1950s). Anyway, this is only related because sometimes [etsy.com profile] celentanowoodworks is so awesome I just want to yell at them. An atomic ukulele. For serious? Good lord. Want.

Right, folks, I'm off to points west for the next week and a half. One more thing before I skedaddle -- a great scene from Some Like It Hot (a marvelous movie with a perfect ending, if you've never seen it!). Marilyn doesn't do much actual playing, but the ukulele's certainly in there. Happy Thursday, all! And thanks so much to [personal profile] sporky_rat for picking up the Daily Ukulele reins.

Beautiful day for a ukulele flashmob, isn't it? This was the scene in Montreal on September 10, 2011. The song is "Sweet Georgia Brown," a jazz standard and pop tune (says Wikipedia) written in 1925 by Ben Bernie and Maceo Pinkard (music) and Kenneth Casey (lyrics).

A number of sources have picked up this story, including BoingBoing, and I have every hope that the internet will pull together to help these folks get a library that can accommodate them (not to mention refrain from melting the soles of their shoes!).

The M.N. Spear Library ([twitter.com profile] MNSpearLibrary) in Shutesbury, Massachusetts, has created a video to help raise money to build a new library. It's backed with a really sweet ukulele, which is, I think, part of what made people sit up and pay attention. Clearly the uke is a mighty beast! But yes, watch the video (it's only a minute or so) and, if you can, why not throw a few dollars their way? There's a donation button on their website, and continuing with the "tiny" theme, every little bit helps!

Obviously this is directed at something of a limited audience, but it turns out that if you have an iPad and an iPhone, you can also have a ukulele, courtesy of the folks at Amidio. Watch the demo. I'm a little bug-eyed, but hey, kids these days with their computers and their machines! (I'm 27. Shhh.)

Who's cool? [blogspot.com profile] heartstringsfilm is cool! She's a fourth-year art student at Cal Arts whose final project is about a girl who decides to take up the ukulele. You should spend some time with this website -- it's got animation tests, character designs, story outlines and fun reference photos. Very cute! Happy Friday, friends.

So how about a folding ukulele? They exist, and you can build it yourself!

There are lots of time-honored ways to make your own ukulele, one of the most noted being with cigar boxes. But because this is the internet, someone has found a way to make what seems to me the unlikeliest uke of all.
