Well, and my brother-in-law John.

I just purchased (and am anxiously refreshing the history tracking of) an Orange Mahalo Ukelele. I didn't pick up any strings for it because I wanted to be able to take it to the music shop in town to see if I could give them some business, but I've used Musician's Friend before and they were very nice.

Oh my gosh, I just bought a ukelele!

edit: Well, it turns out that one was backordered like whoa, so I called them and got another one with expedited shipping for $3 more. ZOMG I'm excited!

I bought a ukulele today. I blame [personal profile] newredshoes for posting about it ALL THE TIME and making me get all dreamy and envious.

In my childhood/teens I played piano, guitar, and for many years bass guitar, but haven't seriously picked up an instrument in about 13 years. But I already love this one - it just sounds so damn gorgeous!

I got a Tanglewood soprano, and spent some time this evening stretching the strings and noodling around. I downloaded a tuning app on my iphone and a chord chart. Already I'm remembering how hard it is to train strength and dexterity into my fingers.

Amanda Palmer's Radiohead covers album is also a big impetus for me. As much as my fannishness of AP is problematic, I adore those covers. I want to learn the Fake Plastic Trees chords for my first song - and of course, learn how to play and sing at the same time.

Any tips for a self-teaching ukulele beginner? Links or advice gladly welcomed!

I've been playing string instruments since I was first introduced to a guitar in school when I was eleven years old. The guitar in my userpic here is my faithful old Chantry acoustic cutaway, Guinevere. I also have a mandolin named Gwen, grew up playing the recorder, organ and piano and am a singer.

A year ago a fellow string player seduced me into the world of Ukuleles.

I chose Mahalo because I'm on disability and can't afford a lot, and I find that the Mahalo ukuleles are fun and sound pretty good! I own seven so far, and they all have names:

Morgana (red)
Daffyd (yellow)
Illyria (pale blue)
Mystique (dark blue)
Angelus (black)
Spike (white)
Peril (purple)

So yes... I'm addicted to the adorable little Hawaiian guitar! I don't play often, but I find it so simple to learn. I would like to have played more this year, but my disability made me quite ill and so it has to wait for now.

I'm looking forward to meeting other ukulele fans here!

I'll bite!

I don't play at all, but am casual friends with Greg Hawkes, the original and current keyboard man from The Cars, who plays well and has even done albums of Cars stuff on ukelele. I have broken and chipped finger bones, so I am not a string guy, myself, really--but if it's super-easy, who knows?

Let's get this party started! I'm Esther, your friendly mod, and I have been playing ukulele for, oh, just under a month. I have a Lanikai pineapple soprano and love it -- when I decided, kind of spur of the moment, that I wanted this in my life, the sound on the pineapple uke just blew me out of the water.

I'm 27, I live in Chicago and I have played piano and some wind instruments before, but never a string. Courtney Welbon's cover of the "To be or not to be" soliloquy from Hamlet was the thing that tipped me over. So far it's looking like a fairly excellent choice.

If this is as slow a week at work as I think it'll be, hopefully I'll be able to put together some links and resources for this place pretty soon. But yes, pop on by and say hello -- I'm very much looking forward to seeing who else enjoys ukes on Dreamwidth!
