You may recognize Cliff Edwards as the voice of Jiminy Cricket in Disney's Pinocchio, but apparently we have him to thank the most for the ukulele craze of the 1920s! So says Wikipedia, so it must be true. Below is a neat little clip mixing a fun song with a series of improbable lit cigarette gags. Plus it's in glorious, glorious technicolor -- as should be your weekends! Happy Friday, all.

Madame Pamita: spiritualist, singer, ukulele player. The link where I found this calls her part of "old weird America," which, as a fan of Carnivàle, I can totally get behind. Also, this is a wax cylinder recording, for old school upon old school.

She's got more on her website, including neat pictures and more music.

How cool are these cats? Super smart. Thanks for making it onto YouTube (and [tumblr.com profile] oldtimeblues) 84 years after the fact, Eddie Thomas and Carl Scott.

More vintage covers! This time it's the 1927 hit "Ain't She Sweet," which I first heard thanks to the Beatles (still prefer the Anthology 1 cover to the Anthology 3/Let It Be-era version!). This guy is also worth watching not just because he makes a vintage plastic uke sound awesome, but because he tunes with a kazoo.

Yes. Seeing is believing.

Also, as a follow-up to this week's mustaches of the world ukulele, here's the front!

The 1920s were kind of a heyday for ukes, and "Say It With a Ukulele" actually spent a week in the Top 10 of the Billboard charts in March 1924. I say it's time for a revival.

This video also has tons of fabulous Roaring Twenties photos. Somebody point me to a repro period bathing suit, quick!
